Meeting with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT)

On December 6, the Consul General of Panama in Kobe, Alejandro de León, met with the directors of the Maritime Division of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan. During the meeting, both parties agreed on the importance of continuing to work together for a safe, sustainable maritime industry aligned with the standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The meeting addressed key issues such as:

  • The participation of women in the maritime industry, promoting inclusion and empowerment in a traditionally male sector.
  • IMO guidelines for a more sustainable, safe and green maritime industry, with emphasis on reducing emissions and protecting the marine environment.
  • Improving services and care for seafarers, recognizing their essential work for the proper functioning of the industry.
  • Incentives for new fleets in the Panamanian registry, seeking to strengthen the competitiveness and modernization of the fleet registered under the Panamanian flag.

Present from MLIT were Usui Narioki, General Manager, Capt. Tomonori Okamura, General Manager, and Shigeru Kurosawa, Director.

The Consul General was accompanied by Any Lam Chong, Second Secretary of the Diplomatic and Consular Career.

This meeting strengthens bilateral cooperation in the maritime field and underscores the commitment of both countries to work towards a more modern, inclusive and environmentally friendly maritime industry.

On behalf of our country, we are pleased to Welcome you to the Website of The General Consulate of Panama, in Kobe Japan.

It is an honor to serve as Consul General of this office which has its consular jurisdiction over the Fukui, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions.

We are located in the second metropolitan region of Japan and in one of the largest shipping centers of the world. Furthermore, we supervise and work together as a team with the office of the Panama Maritime Authority located in the city of Imabari, which is a sister city of Panama city.

Our office essentially provides Maritime and Consular Services along with the promotion of the Panamanian culture and the enhancement of the trade and academic relationships between Panama and the people, companies and institutions of western Japan.

This site aims to provide general information about our country, the Panama Merchant Marine along with other consular and cultural services that our office provides within western Japan, giving you a better understanding of the role and functions of our Office.
