Third Consecutive Year of Commemorating International Women’s Day in Imabari

Imabari, Japan – On March 6, 2025, the SEGUMAR Imabari office and the Consulate General of Panama in Kobe hosted the 3rd edition of International Women’s Day Luncheon at the Kokusai Hotel in Imabari. This event, aligned with the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality, has become an important tradition to reflect on the progress of women, particularly in the maritime industry.

With over 45 participants, the ceremony highlighted gender equality advancements in a sector historically dominated by men. Maritime industry gatherings are typically male-dominated, with fewer opportunities for women to connect. However, this event was exclusively focused on women, offering a unique space for them to share experiences and strengthen their professional networks in an industry becoming more inclusive.

The Consul General of Panama, Alejandro de León, opened the event, emphasizing the importance of creating more spaces for women in decision making positions and discussion panels women in both society and the within the maritime industry.

Presentations highlighted significant sector advancements, such as improvements in maternity and paternity leave, which have created greater equity in the industry. Notable figures such as Ms. Nana Ajichi from Lloyd’s Register and Ms. Nishida Tomomi from Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., shared their experiences on these advancements, which have supported the participation of women in the maritime industry. The toast was delivered by Ms. Chisaki Kobayashi from Imabari City Hall.

A special moment of recognition followed, as the Consulate General of Panama in Kobe honored two female colleagues for their 45 years of service. Their dedication has been instrumental not only in the development of the consulate but also in advancing Panama’s global interests.

Additionally, a video message from the Panama Maritime Authority was shared by the Director General of the Public Ship Registry, Ms. Marta Aparicio, the Deputy Director General of the Merchant Marine, Ms. Rina Berrocal, and the Director of Seafarers, Ms. Maryluz Castillo. Their message reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the global maritime sector.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2025, “Accelerate Action,” called for more rapid and effective progress toward gender equality, a goal that remains central to the international maritime agenda.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, it’s vital to remember that “The waves of progress are powered by the determination of women—together, we can chart a course for a more inclusive and equal maritime world.”

This event also echoed the words of IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez: “I have made diversity, including gender equality, one of my priorities. I am counting on your support to transform the maritime sector. The first thing is to lead by example.”

This gathering reaffirmed the Consulate General of Panama and SEGUMAR Imabari’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable work environment for women in the maritime sector.
